Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.
MARIANNE ELVAN BARFOED
I am a Norwegian figurative artist rooted in classical tradition and driven by continuous exploration. My artistic foundation was shaped through my studies with Odd Nerdrum, where discipline, craftsmanship, and structural clarity became essential to my practice.
For many years, I worked within a limited palette inspired by Anders Zorn’s four-color system. Charcoal drawing became central to my work, strengthening my understanding of form, value, and presence.
After decades of professional practice and exhibitions, I chose to deepen my exploration of color through advanced study at Milan Art Institute, USA. Expanding my palette from four colors to a complex system of warm and cool harmonies transformed my approach to painting and revitalized my artistic process.
Today, drawing and painting exist in close dialogue in my work. Grounded in tradition yet open to renewal, I continue to explore depth, atmosphere, and the expressive potential of color and form.
